The beginning of Simpleton-ism

The journey to simplicity and a slower life begins. Here is how I plan on being slower and simpler.

My life, like most, is complicated. Sometimes I don't even realise how much shit is going on in my life until I put it under investigation. It is easy to think that most of the ill we experience in life are thing done to us by others. When I look into the challenges I face, I'm surprised by how much dumb shit I give myself without even knowing.

If I'm going to get a bike to commute, I may as well spend a little more and...”

So what's my problem?

Restlessness. Holy, moley. It would be a painful experience for me to tally up all the hours of research I have conducted on buying a new thing, planning a big idea and reasoning with myself on the merits of the plan. Even when I was doing this plan to live more simply.

Ok, take this example. So I'm currently looking for ways to build a simple and slow life and in this search I am consuming more and more content on the matter. One tip was to ride a bike instead of drive or use as a partial commute alternative. Well, three days later I'm thinking of buying a $1,300 mountain bike. I had reasoned my expectations upwards, I thought, ''if I'm going to get a bike to commute, I may as well spend a little more and..." This mentality can eventuate as far are your budget (and debt capacity) will allow. In the end, you'll feel the same sense of guilt after spending time and money on something that barely adds value to your life.

So as you read my writings, just remember that I am as fallible as they come. I am not a calm, still zen motherfucker. For this reason I hope that my thoughts connect with you on a meaningful level where you trust that maybe the stuff I end up doing will work for you too.

I'll leave this scribbling at that. My next writing will be on the rules I've found and how I cut them down to the plan that I'll follow.

Go Slow and Be Simple.
